I can’t believe how much I have loved being pregnant. I don’t know whether it’s because I’ve wanted this for so long or because I’ve had a relatively smooth pregnancy or because I just think it is an absolutely awesome experience, and I am starting to mourn the end of this experience a little. Just a little.
That being said – I can’t wait for people to stop looking at/sizing up/backing away from/making a comment about me. I’m ready to just blend in a little bit. In the beginning, I started keeping a list of the random comments that people made to me about the pregnancy/baby. Here are a few of my favorites:
“Wow! You’ve really popped out.” --unnamed colleague at HMH
“Well your definitely prego now.” --a different unnamed colleague at HMH
“I don’t mean to be offensive, but are you pregnant?” --Steak-n-Shake waitress in Maplewood, MO
“Oh, you’re due in July. You’ll have a Cancer. Don’t be surprised if your baby is too attached to you. I mean, you’ll probably get sick of how attached the kid will be. Cancer’s are like that.” --furniture salesperson at American Signature in Altamonte Springs
"Congratulations! When are you due? Oh, that's nice. Is the baby healthy?" --waitress at Bahama Breeze in Altamonte Springs (how do you answer that?)
"You walk like me now!" --colleague at HMH, who I have to mention is a 60-year old man with chronic foot problems
"So I guess that kid doesn't want to come out yet, eh? Heh heh." --yet another unnamed colleague at HMH
"Wow. Your feet are really swollen." --dozens and dozens of strangers over the past few months

Wait, so you didn't get, "are you having twins!"?? I guess that was just me...
ReplyDeleteOh-and a favorite standard line "your HUGE!" Thanks. I didn't know.
It is a little sad not being pregnant anymore...and then all of the sudden you find yourself being drawn to all pregnant women and being incredibly interested in how their pregnancy is going...or, maybe just me again :)
I think my favorite was an actual family member (who will remain unidentified) labeled a picture of my in a pool (which you didn't even see my belly) SHAMU...I mean I know I was about 8.5 months pregnant at the time and large, but come on! "Not nice." as my little Jake would say.
ReplyDeleteI am with Kelly though about being drawn to women who are pregnant and wondering how it is going. I feel lucky to have had such a great pregnancy and think it's one of the neatest things ever.
Enjoy your last few days (even though I know you are uncomfortable). And pretty soon we'll all be commenting on the baby's size instead of yours.
